London Congestion Charging

In London there are congestion fees for driving in and through it in certain areas. You are liable for the payment of such fees during your van hire or car hire period including collection and return of the vehicle.

The congestion charging zone is bounded by the ‘Inner Ring Road’ linking Euston Rd, Pentonville Rd, Tower Bridge, Elephant & Castle, Vauxhall Bridge Rd, Park Lane and Marylebone Rd. The ‘Inner Ring Road’ provides a route round the charging zone and charges apply only to vehicles travelling inside it. Charges do not apply if travelling on the ‘Inner Ring Road’. Drivers are warned on roads leading into the zone that they are approaching the charging zone.

When and How Much
Everyone (except those exempt or discounted) driving on public roads between 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday in the congestion charging zone has to pay a daily charge of:

£10.00 if paid in advance or on the day of travel
£12.00 if paid by midnight the charging day after travel
£9.00 if registered for Congestion Charging Auto Pay

This payment allows you to enter, drive around and leave the congestion charging zone as many times as you wish that day.

How You Can Pay
Payment can be made via TfL call centre, by SMS, via the web (www.cclondon.com), in retail outlets offering the PayPoint service or in Post Offices.
The charge of £10.00 can be paid at any time up to midnight on the day of entry into the zone. Payment of the charge the following day is possible but the charge would increase to £12.00.

Penalty Charges
If the payment is not made by midnight the following day a Penalty Charge notice of £120.00 will be issued which the hirer is liable to pay. This is reduced by 50% if paid within 14 days otherwise there is a 28 day limit.

Permit Required for some Household Waste Recycling Centres

Anyone who is planning to hire a van to take household waste to the tip is now advised to plan ahead as more and more councils are now operating a permit scheme to restrict access to household waste recycling centres by vans or vehicles with trailers of more than 1.8m internal length.

This means you cannot simply hire a van for the weekend and then take it to the tip – you will need to contact your local council to confirm wheteher or not you need to be issued with a permit.

Many councils have adopted the permit scheme to try and stop the abuse of tips by trade users, who pretend that their waste is domestic in order to avoid paying commercial rates for its disposal.

Christmas is coming!

The title says it all! Not good for Turkeys, Geese or the ordinary man in the street who is looking for van hire leading up to festive period and including the New Year.

Christmas is looming up at a rate of knots. The larger vehicle fleets across the country are already starting to hire large portions of their van fleets to the likes of Royal Mail, Argos and DHL etc. The supermarkets also hire a lot of additional vehicles over the Christmas period to move stock across the country and even from store to store.

This means that once again the number of vehicles available for spot hire (daily hire) by the ordinary British customer across the UK will start to diminish from this weekend. The chances of picking up a larger vehicle at short notice will also start to diminish as a result. In fact the hire of 3.5 ton Luton vans with tail lifts has almost ground to a halt already – Postman Pat needs a bigger van at Christmas. The hire of Luton vans or box vans and indeed long wheel base vans is a testament to the growth of internet shopping.

Advanced planning is required especially if there is a house move in the offing or a son / daughter to collect from university. Don’t leave it until the last minute to organise a vehicle if you already know where & when it will be required. Underage Drivers

Yellohire are able to rent vehicles to drivers between the ages of 21 – 25 from the majority of locations. However this will invariably attract an additional daily charge for under age insurance. There are also additional requirements & restrictions which are as follows:

Full UK licence to have been held for at least 24 months

No points whatsoever on the licence

No bans or convictions ever

The largest car that is available will be a 1.4 litre for under age drivers

The largest van that will be available will be a LWB Transit or similar

Luton box vans & minibuses are NOT available to under age drivers from most locations

The additional insurance cost is generally £20.00 per day but this can vary & in a few instances may not be required at all so please check with us first.

YelloHire Trialling New Weekend Opening Hours

Van and Car Hire Security Deposits

Security deposits are taken by every reputable car and van hire company. This deposit is held against loss or damage of the vehicle. The size of the deposit typically depends on the type of vehicle you are hiring and the length of time that you are keeping the vehicle.

Security deposits range from around £100 to £650 and are taken from, or secured against, the driver’s credit or debit card. On receipt of the vehicle back in good condition, the deposit is returned to the driver.

To make it even easier, YelloHire now offer a no deposit hire option. Other companies who provide a no deposit hire option charge between £10 and £20 a day for the privilege. At YelloHire, the no deposit option is a flat fee of £20 regardless of the length of the booking.
