Excess is the renter's responsibility. This is the maximum liability that you will be held accountable for in cases of loss or severe damage caused in an accident - as long as it does not involve malicious damage (by the renter) or alcohol consumption which invalidates all insurance policies.
Rental Duration

Van Hire and Minibus Rental additions
Carriage of goods
It is the responsibility of the driver of all rental vans to ensure that the vehicle is loaded safely and securely. It is really important that vans are not overloaded. Commercial vehicles are subject to roadside checks by the Ministry of Transport - extra precautions must be taken with the vehicle after loading making sure all door are safely secured and that loads will not be subject to sudden movement which may cause a danger to other road users. Certain types of goods are NOT allowed to be transported in any vehicles that we rent. Please check with us if you are at all uncertain.
Driving licence requirements
UK drivers who passed their ordinary car driving test prior to 1 January 1997 will normally have been issued an old style UK Driving Licence showing vehicles of Group A or a new style EC Driving Licence showing vehicles of Categories B, C1 and D1. Drivers who passed their ordinary driving test after 1 January 1997 are only issued a Driving Licence showing vehicles of Category B (up to 8 passenger seats); Categories C1 and D1 are no longer issued automatically
Passenger carrying vehicles including minibuses
Driving Licence Category D (9 or more passenger seats) or Category D1 (9 to 16 passenger seats). All drivers of minibuses (9-16 passenger seats) are required to hold a valid driving licence showing either Group A on an old style UK Licence or Category B & D or D1 on a new EC style Licence issued in any EU Country. Drivers who passed the car test (Category B) after 1 January 1997 and who wish to drive a minibus are required to take a further Statutory Driving test for vehicles in Category D or D1. A further Driving Test may be required to tow a trailer (Category E). However; certain drivers who passed the car test (Category B) after 1 January 1997 are permitted to drive a vehicle in Category D1 (minibuses) without the need for a further test so long as the following conditions are met: -
1) A full driving licence has been held for at least two years.
2) The driver receives no payment (or any other consideration) other than out of pocket expenses (i.e. they are a volunteer).
3) The vehicle is driven for social purposes only .

Frequently asked questions from UK car hire customer
Can we choose our make or model or car?
Generally no but at selected locations such as the larger airports i.e. London Heathrow and London Gatwick you are given a choice of several cars. All hire cars of course are less than 3 months old.
What if I have points on my licence?
This does not mean that you cannot rent a car, but call our reservations department on 0800 023 53 97 to ensure that the car rental partner will accept a booking with your endorsements.
Can I make amendments to a booking?
Yes, please call 0800 023 53 97 and talk to our reservations team.
If I print a copy of the voucher, can I reprint it if I later amend a booking?
Yes, we will email you a new voucher.
What do I do if the car I want doesn't appear in the display list?
This could be due to restrictions on the driver age, but if your driver will be between the ages of 25 - 65, there should not be any restrictions imposed. Please call our reservations centre with your specific requirements on 0800 023 53 97.
How do I know if the car rental partner is on-airport or not?
Locations will vary depending on car rental partner, but most will have a courtesy bus to their office if they are not located directly in the arrivals lounge.
What is the shortest time in which I can book a car before I travel? What if I fly the same day?
Web bookings can be taken 12 hours before departure. For bookings for collection in the next 12 hours please call our reservations department on 0800 023 53 97.
What happens if I do not have a credit card?
Please ring our reservations department on 0800 023 53 97 as some car rental partners will accept cash deposits.
Why do I have to put cancellations in writing?
We require letters of cancellation from the customer for proof of cancellation and to keep on our internal files. You can also cancel via email on cancellations@yellohire.com
Where can I find a list of all your rental locations?
All of our rental locations can be found on our booking engine drop-down list.
Can I book one-way rentals?
Yes, in selected locations. Please call our reservation department on 0800 023 53 97 for a quote. Restrictions may apply, particularly if you require cross border one-way rentals. We are currently developing the technology to allow us to do this online, and expect to release this soon.
What is the minimum/maximum age to rent a car online?
You must be between 22 and 75 at the time of rental pick-up, but if you are outside this age range please call our reservations department for a quote on 0800 023 53 97.
What if my flight is delayed?
As long as we have been notified of the flight number before you travel and there is an out of hours service available, the car rental partners will wait (although an out of hours charge payable locally may occur.)
Why should I book on the website? What are the benefits?
It makes financial sense. The cost of an online booking is significantly less than the cost of a phone call.
How do I find out how much deposit I have to leave with the car rental partner?
At the booking stage of the online process there is a panel telling what is and what is not included in the pre-paid price – it is there. All deposits for both insurance excess and fuel will be advised at this stage.
Where are the additional extras – when do I pay for them?
Most extras, where offered are payable locally at time of pick-up'..
Sometimes, when I insert certain dates, only 3 or more cars are available in certain locations, but more cars are available when I phone reservations. Why?
This may be because the driver age is under 22 or over 75 years of age and there are restrictions on cars they can rent. Also the dates and times entered may be out of hours for the given car rental partner.
What is the latest day before departure I can make a booking online?
12 hours prior to desired rental date.
Does the web show daily rates?
Yes.
Do you hire cars have a CD player?
All vehicles come with a CD/Radio player as standard.
Can I drive on my USA (or foreign driving licence)
Yes provided you have not been in residence in the UK for more than 12 months (after 12 months the law states you must exchange your licence for a UK licence.)
Can I pay for someone else to rent a car ?
Yes you can pay for the hire of the car but the person who is going to be the driver must be listed as the main driver at the time of booking. The driver must present with his or her own credit card at the time of collection.
Can I rent a diesel car ?
We cannot guarantee diesels but we do have them on fleet, you may "request" diesel and we will do our best. Again at the larger depot such as major airport you are given a choice of cars, which will often include diesel models.
If I am under 25 what is the largest car I may rent?
Please check with our office on 0800 023 53 97 as the requirements can change depending on the location selected.
I have heard horror stories regarding rental companies charging for damage at a later time after my rental has finished?
We offer two very basic and very important rules to avoid this EVER happening which are: -
a) Walk around the car and check for damage before your leave the rental depot.
b) Upon return of your rental vehicle insist on the car being check whilst you are present DO NOT take no for an answer.
This will definitely avoid mistakes ever happening, always take the name and/or get a signature on your rental agreement.
All damage should be noted on your rental agreement if it is not YOU could be held accountable at the end of the rental. Two minutes at the start of any rental WILL prevent this ever happening.
