Tips for driving a van for first time drivers
For many people hiring a van for the first time can be a daunting task. We have come up with some helpful tips to make your experience easier.
Be aware of the width, length and height of the vehicle when hiring a van, especially if you’re not used to driving one as vans are a lot larger than cars. Many vans are 2m taller or more and will not go under most car park barriers.
Vans are less stable when cornering than cars, especially when loaded. Give yourself plenty of time and space when taking corners and do so slowly and safely.
The larger and heavier a vehicle is means the longer it takes to stop. Also it is a good idea to remember that your load can shift in a van, be mindful of this when braking and cornering.
Many vans do not have rear windows or rear view mirrors, van wing mirrors are larger in order to assist you in being able to see what is going on around the vehicle. Watch out for cyclists and bikers who might be tempted to overtake on the blind side.
Van speed limits are lower than car speed limits on dual carrigeways and single carrigeways with national speed limit by 10mph, don’t be caught out.
